The event
Helsinki 1952 · 6mR
In August 2027, the 6 Metre World Championship returns to Helsinki, as the city celebrates 75 years since hosting the 1952 Summer Olympics — the last Games in which the 6 Metre class competed as an Olympic class.
Many of the yachts that took part in the 1952 sailing events are still actively competing to this day, creating a continuity between the Olympic fleet of 1952 and today’s international fleet.
Coming back to historic waters, the 2027 World Championship will celebrate this Olympic legacy while providing high end modern race management and media coverage.
The 2027 World Championship will bring together an expected 50–60 boats from Europe, North America and Scandinavia, making it one of the largest 6 Metre fleets ever assembled.
Blending classic yacht racing with a modern fleet pushing performance, the regatta will be sailed in Classic and Open divisions. The two fleets will compete against the backdrop of the Helsinki archipelago, with the regatta base at Nyländska Jaktklubben on Blekholmen, in the heart of the city’s South Harbor. Boat launch is at Jouko Lindgrens Boatyard in the West Harbour.
Notice of Race will be published in October. Entry opens 16.11.2026 at 09:00 CET.
The host club

Founded in 1861, NJK is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the Nordics. Its island pavilion on Blekholmen was designed in 1900 by the yacht designer and architect Gustaf Estlander, and still serves as clubhouse, race office and dining room.
The club has run World Championships for the Dragon, 6mR and 12mR classes, and the harbour is being renovated ahead of 2027 to give competitors even better facilities — all within minutes of the centre of Helsinki.

Practical information
Helsinki-Vantaa airport has direct flights from all major 6mR nations — Germany, Switzerland, the UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain and the USA. The airport is 30 minutes from the South Harbour by train or taxi. Daily ferries connect Helsinki with Stockholm, Tallinn and Travemünde, and the Baltic motorways make road transport straightforward.
Finnlines, a Grimaldi Group company, is a proud partner of the 6mR World Championship 2027. Participants will enjoy good offers on Finnlines as well as on other Grimaldi-owned lines from several European places and also from North America. A reservation code will be published within the next weeks so that teams can make their bookings — more information, prices and the reservation code will follow within days or weeks, and we will inform you as soon as they are available. Finnlines is the practical way to bring boats, trailers and support vehicles: Travemünde–Helsinki (Germany, daily), Rostock–Helsinki (Germany), Malmö–Travemünde (Sweden connection) and Kapellskär–Naantali (Sweden). Crews may travel with their vehicle; book cargo space well in advance for 2027. If needed, our Logistics team will assist you — see their contact details in the Contact section.
Measurement, lift-in and lift-out are handled at Lindgrenin Telakka in the West Harbour, with cradles and masts stored on site. Entry, registration and all race documents are handled at the race office at Lindgrenin Telakka 5-7.8 and from 8.8 onwards at the NJK pavilion on Blekholmen.
Our partner hotels are Original Sokos Hotel Pier 4, Solo Sokos Hotel Torni and Solo Sokos Hotel Helsinki, all only a few hundred metres from the tender pier serving the regatta harbour. Rooms are held for competitors, teams and guests; Booking details will follow soon.. SHUTTLE SERVICE During the event between the partner hotels and ferrypoint to the venue NJK Blekholmen.
Regatta harbour at Blekholmen: race office, sailors lounge, jury, info point, storage and sauna, plus berths for the 6mR fleet and tenders. Shuttle service and waterbus connect the island to the city.
The race courses lie off Isosaari, 5.5 NM from NJK Blekholmen (45–60 min transit). Well outside the inner city channels, they offer true open-sea conditions with clean winds and Baltic swell, tactical shifts off the outer archipelago, and a scenic setting among historic sea fortresses.

Weather briefing by meteorologist Martin Gahmberg
August racing on the Gulf of Finland is full of variety. Southwest is the most common wind direction — it is both the sea breeze and the typical large-scale flow from passing weather systems — while easterly winds along the Gulf of Finland are also common and have become more typical in recent years. Helsinki's northerly location means days can vary a lot depending on how the weather systems hit: from light and shifty to fresh or strong, and from sunny to rainy.
Typical highs 17–23 °C, occasionally up to 25 °C; around 12 °C at night
Usually between 15–20 °C — refreshing
41% of hours, mean speed 13.4 kn; easterlies second at 16%
Light and shifty to fresh or strong — sun or rain
The sea is refreshing at around 17–19 °C — bring layers, a windproof jacket, rain gear and shorts.
